jamin High School, New York, be­gan writing poetry for magazines, then formed song-writing partnership with composer Jimmie McHugh. An early song of this partnership was "I Can't Give You Anything But Love." After several years with McHugh, formed similar association with Jerome Kern. With brother, Herbert Fields, wrote several motion-picture scenarios: The Joy of Loving; Riviera; Father Takes a Wife; and book and lyrics for stage shows: Let's Face It; International Revue; Up in Central Park; Mexican Hay ride (lyrics); Blackbirds.
